While Teri Finneman, a journalism professor at the University of Kansas, was conducting her award-winning research into the ways COVID-19 impacted community journalism in the Midwest, she spotted a problem faced by newspapers that has reached a critical point: newspapers have been operating under a business model nearly as old as the industry itself.

Symposium goes digital November 19
The Donovan and Betty Witham Symposium on Excellence in Newspapers will be held virtually on November 19 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CT, featuring a variety of sessions aimed at helping newspaper members from across the state come together and sharpen their skills.
New NDNA board elections
During the NDNA Board meeting held on Oct. 15, Jill Friesz was elected to serve as a director, and former 2nd Vice President Amy Wobbema was elected to serve as 1st Vice President, filling the remainder of the seat formerly held by Cecile Wehrman. Director Cole Short was elected to serve as 2nd Vice President.
Record recognized nationally with 11 awards, and other ND accolades
The Walsh County Record won 11 awards in this year’s National Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest. Other ND wins include: The Leader-News, The Journal, and Tioga Tribune.
North Dakota News Co-op takes shape
The North Dakota News Cooperative (NDNC) is poised to begin producing news stories and content for use by news outlets across the state, after work started by the Future of Newspapers Committee has blossomed into a full-fledged nonprofit. The group’s board of directors plans to post the position of managing editor in the coming months, with content expected to begin being distributed to newspapers in 2022.
ND newspapers prevail as 'Best of the Dakotas'
North Dakota newspapers brought home the gold last week, securing a victory in the Best of the Dakotas newspaper contest, sweeping three of five general excellence circulation categories and bringing home the traveling trophy in the rivalry contest between North and South Dakota newspapers.
