The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) announced this past week that a brine spill at an injection well site occurred in Bottineau County.
The spill, which is four and a half miles from Maxbass, occurred because of a failed pipe fitting
“Initial estimates indicate approximately 1000 barrels of salt brine were released, with approximately 100 barrels escaping the site into a neighboring wetland,” stated the North Dakota Department of Health in a press release.
“A temporary berm has been constructed to prevent additional fluid from reaching the wetland. About 700 barrels of brine have been recovered.”
According to Kris Roberts, environmental response team leader with the Environmental Health Service of the NDDoH, state health inspectors and members of the oil and gas division have been at the spill location with the NDDoH collecting samples for testing.
The state health department also stated that it will assist in assessment and remediation activities between the NDDoH and the owners of the site.
Denbury Onshore owns the injection oil site in the county.
