As Bottineau High School graduates walked across the stage on Sunday afternoon, there was one student that certainly earned his place with the graduating class of 2014.
Levi Indvik, who is just 16 years old, graduated with the senior class over the weekend when he should have just completed his junior year and preparing for his senior year in the fall. However, due to his hard work in the past three years, Indvik has accomplished what only a handful of students have done in the entire history of the school, to graduate early with high honors.
Indvik’s decision to graduate early was an easy one for him to make, the opportunity to progress in his education without dissipate valuable time in his studies and future.
“The required credits to graduate are 24, and I was going to have 22 credits starting my senior year. I felt talking another school year just to get two more credits was not worth it,” Indvik said.
“I have also taken almost all worthwhile classes, so my senior year would have just been filled with electives that I was not interested in. Taking another year of high school would have held me back academically.”
A student cannot just earn his or her’s credits and graduate early. For Indvik, he had a number of steps he had taken so he could graduate early.
“I needed to set up a schedule that would get all my required classes out of the way. This included American Government and English IV,” Indvik said.
“Because graduating a year early goes against school policy, I needed to appeal to the school board for permission to graduate early. If they approve, I just needed to pass my classes and get through the rest of the school year.”
Indvik earned a 4.0 GPA his senior year with an overall GPA of 3.914. He plans to attend the University of North Dakota this fall with the intention of earning his bachelor of arts degree in psychology. Outside of his undergraduate work, he wants to attend UND’s medical school or graduate program to become a psychiatrist or a forensic psychologist.
As the year ended for Indvik, he stated his fondest memory of high school in Bottineau was being a member of the drama club.
“I enjoyed performing plays through drama club,” he said. “I found such a great group of friends in drama club. The cast parties afterwards were always fun, too.”
