WILLISTON - The Dakota College at Bottineau baseball team found some good form near the end of its 2014 season but couldn’t keep things going at the NJCAA Region XIII tournament.
The Lumberjacks started the season with 20 consecutive losses. However, after picking up three wins from four against Lake Region State two weeks ago, DCB picked up another win against the Royals on Friday during the teams’ Region XIII tournament opener.
It was there that DCB won a 17-9 encounter with LRSC.
After the Royals opened up a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning, the runs just seemed to keep as the two teams combined for 37 base hits and nine errors.
DCB shortstop Brett Hebel had a particularly big game, going 4-for-5 at the plate, hitting one home run and driving in three runs.
The Lumberjacks then met later on Friday against Williston State, the tournament’s host team. The Tetons ran out 9-4 winners, with DCB pitcher Greg Thompson picking up the loss.
DCB picked up its second win of the tournament in its first game Saturday. Infielder Cody Brooks and outfielder Cody Bronson scored three and two runs, respectively, in a 12-10 win over Bismarck State.
WSC WINS AGAIN
The Lumberjacks’ season ended later that day, though, when DCB faced Williston State once more. The Tetons beat their in-state rivals once more, this time defeating DCB 11-0 in five innings.
DCB’s second loss of the Region XIII tournament saw the Lumberjacks end their 2014 campaign with a 5-23 record.
The Lumberjacks are set to lose six sophomores in Brooks, Thompson, Adam Denny, Connor Drewry, Cody Milliken and Alphonzo Rigby.
