The International Scholar Laureate Program (ISLP) has nominated Bottineau resident Stephanie Liang to represent the United States as one of its student members to attend the International Scholar Laureate Program Student Delegation on Medicine and Science, which will take place in Australia and New Zealand from May 9-29.
ISLP is associated with Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two year colleges which recognizes and encourages academic achievement for community college students. Liang is a member of Phi Theta Kappa as a student at Dakota College at Bottineau (DCB).
In order to gain membership to ISLP’s Delegation on Medicine and Sciences, a Phi Thete Kappa student must be considered one of the best scholars in the world. Liang is a 2012 Bottineau High School graduate and she will earn her associate of science from Dakota College at Bottineau on May 16 with honors. She will attend North Dakota State University in the fall of the year where she will begin her studies toward a degree in pharmacy.
The ISLP nominated Liang for this educational program due to her academic achievements at DCB and as a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor society.
Liang feels this experience will advance her in her future studies to become a pharmacist.
“Attending this program will challenge me to develop my leadership skills and reach my career goals of becoming a pharmacist, and maybe a doctor later on in life,” Liang said.
“Through this experience, I will be able to see and understand the many achievements and medical challenges of these countries. Upon returning to America, this trip will broaden my horizon academically and culturally, motivate and help define my career goals in the future.”
During her time in Australia and New Zealand, Liang will have the opportunity to take in many medical and science events, some of which include:
● Take in New Zealand’s comprehensive medical environment
● Explore a New Zealand medical school or hospital
● Attend a panel presentation on managing large-scale trauma
● Learn how 21st Century medicine in Australia is tackling the unique pathogens of tropical infectious diseases
● Experience bush medicine in Australia’s outback
● Look into the science of organ and tissue prevention
● Aboriginal appliques of medicine plants
Liang will also be granted cultural experiences on her trip like Christchurch, the French village of Akaroa, Sydney, Calga Springs, Sydney Opera House and much more.
Liang is excited to go on this educational and cultural trip for a number of reasons.
“I like to experience different cultures and to see if the medical field is the right path for me,” Liang said.
