An animal rescue organization has been established in Bottineau which assists dogs that are in need of a home.
Ashley Kromrey has started North Dakota Animals in Need (NDAIN), in association with Marissa Pewe who quickly teamed up with Kromrey after learning about the organization.
“In this area we see an abundance of stray dogs and cats, and mostly pets that aren’t spayed and neutered, contributing to overpopulation,” Pewe said. “We felt there needed to be something done since the next closest shelter is in Minot. It has grown so much more than we ever expected, but in a good way.
“Our goal is to take in animals in need, get them into good health, vaccinated, spayed or neutered and then placed into good adoptive homes where they can live out their lives,” Pewe added.
Kromrey and Pewe have been receiving dogs that have become strays, from individuals who can no longer care for animals or from accidental litters with a large number of dogs.
Once the two women acquire the animals, they are taken to Turtle Mountain Veterinary Service for any medical care they might need. From there, they begin the work to find foster homes for the animals, which at times include their own homes.
Kromrey and Pewe utilize Facebook and their website to get the word out about the dogs that need homes.
“We work on promoting their information, using our Facebook page and website, to get them adopted,” Pewe said. “Each interested family has to fill out a pre-adoption application to be approved, which includes reference checks, veterinary checks, etc…, and the final step, if approved, is the contract.
“If pets are not old enough at the time of adoption to be spayed and neutered, the adopter must get this done in our set time frame, and there are no exceptions to getting this done,” Pewe said.
A big part of NDAIN is the volunteers. The organization does have a small number of volunteers, but are looking for more to assist in their cause with the animals.
“We are always looking for volunteers. We need foster homes mainly, and also people to do transportation whether it’s donated supplies or pets,” Pewe said. “We have gotten pets from as far away as Montana, and without volunteers, they would never arrive here.”
“Volunteer or foster applications can be found on our website. We also always appreciate supplies as well, including puppy pads, toys, chews, laundry detergent, paper towels, et cetera.”
Individuals who are interested in becoming a volunteer, adopting an animal or donating supplies, can do so through its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/NorthDakotaAnimalsInNeed or through the NDAIN’s e-mail at ndain@hotmail.com.
