Stars skate past Stampede, Ice Dawgz

Bottineau 19U experienced both ends of close contests this past weekend, as well as one strong shut out win.

The Stars won a 1-0 overtime game against West Fargo and Saturday, but then fell 3-2 in a close one with Fargo on Sunday. Sandwiched between was a 7-0 shut out of the Mayport Ice Dawgz on Saturday evening.

First, early on Saturday afternoon the Stars and the West Fargo 14U Stampede did battle.

The game was defensive struggle throughout, as neither team was able to light the lamp throughout regulation.

Despite getting out shot 17-13 in the contest, the Stars found the back of the net when it mattered.

An overtime goal by Erin Severson earned the Stars the win.

Bailey Neubauer assisted on the play, which marks the second time this season that Severson earned a game-winner in the extra period.

The goal came at 5:03 of the overtime period as Severson beat the Stampede net minder to give her team a victory.

Later in the evening on Saturday the Stars continued their strong defensive play in a 7-0 shut out win over the Mayport Ice Dawgz.
Neither team was able to score in the first period, but the Stars exploded for five goals in the second period.

Less than 30 seconds into the period Hunter Bennie notched a power play goal to put Bottineau up 1-0. Shelby Pedie assisted on the play.

Paige Vad found the back of the net later in the period thanks to assists from Severson and Neubauer.

Sonja Gilje notched an unassisted marker a little more than a minute later to put the Stars up 3-0.

Severson and Bennie each notched goals in the second period to give them each their second goals of the weekend. Alexis Kihle assisted on the Severson goal, while Victoria Gullett earned a helper on the Bennie goal.

Stars goaltender Jacie Ceglowski earned her second straight and eighth shut out of the season with 13 saves, three of which came in the final frame.

In that third period the Stars added two more goals to extend their lead.

Pedie scored her first goal of the game at 10:20 of the third period. Gilje and Vad earned helpers on the play.

To close out the scoring for the Stars Cheyenne Sturlaugson found the back of the net at 8:56 of the final period. Pedie and Bennie were credited with assists on the play.

Bottineau out shot the Ice Dawgz 48-13 in the win.

The Stars would not get a win on Sunday, however, as they fell 3-2 in a tight struggle with Fargo 14U Freeze.

Bottineau started the game strong as they took a 1-0 lead on Severson’s third goal of the weekend. Megan Olson earned an assist on the play.

In the second period the Freeze opened up their offense. They scored goals at 14:17 and 8:18 of the period to take a 2-1 lead.
The Freeze opened their lead up to 3-1 with a goal at 3:28 in the final period.

Bennie scored notched her third goal of the weekend with less than 30 seconds left in the contest to draw the Stars to within one, but they ran out of time to earn the victory. Katie Kerslake assisted on the goal.

Shots were fairly even between the two teams with the Freeze earning a narrow advantage of 24-22.

The weekend pushed the Stars’ overall record to 13-10-2 on the season.

Bottineau takes to the road next weekend as they will travel to play Mayport and Park River on Saturday, and then on to Langdon on Sunday.

They will host both Langdon and Hazen on Feb. 21-22 to close out their regular season and home season. The state tournament will begin on Friday, Feb. 28 in Fargo.
