The Bottineau Stars came out firing last Thursday in a 47-42 win over Our Redeemer’s Christian School (ORCS) in Bottineau.

The Stars’ defense was strong to start too, as they began on a 10-3 run to begin the game.

However, the start was short lived, as the Stars allowed the Knights back into the game, even surrendering the lead in the second quarter.

In the second half, things stabilized for Bottineau, but the poor first half lingered a bit, and they allowed the Knights back in it, but held on for a five-point win.

“We just didn’t have a good start, we have to improve on our starts,” said Bottineau senior Megan Saville. “You can only improve.”

A full week removed from their previous game, the Stars should have had plenty of time to prepare for ORCS.

“It was probably helpful, but we also didn’t come out as well as we should have,” Saville said.

Stephanie Brenden had 13 points, and Kennedy Olson joined in with 10 to lead the stars.

Senior Courtney Gallagher added nine, and fellow senior Danielle McDonald had seven to help out the Stars in the win.

Freshman Morgan Olson had 19, and Karlee Zablotney had 17 for the Knights in the losing effort.

ORCS dropped to 8-8 with the loss, while Bottineau improved to the same record.

Bottineau’s schedule picks up this week as they play on the road at 5:45 p.m. in Sawyer for their final District 11 game.

Saville said the game is a must win.

“We have to get the win, because otherwise we’ll be putting ourselves in a tougher district spot,” Saville said. “We just have to keep our heads up, keep positive.”

The Stars also play in Burlington next Monday evening. Their final home game will be on Feb. 21 when they host Kenmare.

Saville hopes that the Stars can use the final games as preparation for the district tournament that begins on Feb. 28.

“The next few games we’re just going to try and get the ball rolling, so we can go into districts with a good head on our shoulders,” Saville said.“We just have to come out strong, come out differently.”

Bottineau is currently in fourth place in the district at 4-2.

Towner-Granville-Upham, Rugby and Velva are all 5-1. However, Velva and Rugby have not played yet, and Bottineau holds the tiebreaker over the Panthers.
