The Dakota College at Bottineau women’s basketball team dropped below .500 for the first time since they were 2-3 back on Nov. 11, when they lost their third straight to MonDak opponent Dawson Community College.
The Ladyjacks fell to another MonDak opponents Lake Region State College (LRSC) 86-64 last Monday to drop to 11-12 overall for the season.
Both teams played pretty evenly for a good part of the game, and DCB trailed by just seven at halftime.
However, the Lady Royals, who have lost only three game and none in the MonDak this season, came out firing in the second half, and DCB fell behind.
“We played very well defensively early in the game and had a number of good shots offensively,” stated Ladyjacks head coach Wayne Johnson. “Unfortunately we didn’t shoot well early and that caught up with us later in the game.”
DCB’s shooting woes were most evident beyond the arc as they were a mere 3-for-20, their worst performance from three-point range all season.
“We struggled from the three point line and we need to shoot that shot well against the quality teams,” Johnson stated.
Dominique Staten led DCB in scoring with 13 points on 4-of-4 shooting and 5-for-6 from the free throw line.
Tiffany Bradford (13), Savannah Bruce (10) and Mary Jones (10) also scored in double figures.
Bruce was ejected from the game in the second half after what was deemed by officials as an intentional elbowing. She has since been suspended for the Ladyjacks’ next two contests.
Sophomore Leah Parizek had 10 rebounds and four assists and two blocks to led DCB in all three categories.
Despite the double-digit loss, Johnson is optimistic for DCB moving forward.
“Overall it was a good effort,” Johnson stated. “They just wore us down with too many offensive weapons.”
DCB hosted Bismarck State College last night, but scores and stats were unavailable by press time.
The Ladyjacks travel to Bismarck on Thursday night for a crucial game against United Tribes Technical College. The game will determine who hosts the upcoming Region XIII Tournament.
