Both wins and points have not come easy for the Westhope-Newburg girls basketball team that lost three more games this past week, and failed to score more than 31 points in any of them.
The Sioux fell 71-15 in Burlington last Monday, 61-31 to Towner-Granville-Upham (TGU) in Westhope last Thursday and 47-26 to Dunseith in Westhope last Friday.
However, despite that, coach Jordan Cooper does think they are getting better.
“The girls are playing a lot better, we just have to put the ball in the hole,” Cooper said. “We have some girls healthy again, and we’re a lot more enthusiastic, and the girls are playing hard.”
Last Monday the Sioux were out matched in a 56-point loss to the Des Lacs-Burlington (DLB) Lakers.
Courtney Vogel had 21 points as DLB dominated throughout. They led 42-13 at halftime, and the scoring woes led the Sioux to only two second-half points.
Molly Lodoen led the Sioux with five points.
On Thursday things went a bit better for the Sioux as they managed to score 31 points, but still lost by 30 to one of the top teams in District 11.
It was a battle early on as the Titans led by just five after one quarter. However, the Sioux offense sputtered and it was a 17-point halftime lead for TGU.
The Thompson girls, McKenna and McKayla, scored 13 and 11 points respectively for TGU in the win.
Molly Lodoen had 12 points, while sister Maddy added eight points in the losing effort.
In their closest game of the week the Sioux fell by 21 to Dunseith in front of the Sioux crowd last Friday in the first half of a girls/boys doubleheader.
WN trailed by just five again after one quarter, but fell behind by 18 at halftime. It remained about that deficit the rest of the way out as the Sioux stabilized, but could not regain any ground.
The Sioux are still without leading scorer and rebounder Lauren Mach.
“It’s not like we’re not trying, we try hard,” Cooper said. “Hopefully we get Lauren back and we can get healthy.”
Molly Lodoen had 11 points, while Amber Hall and Paige Stratton each added six for the Sioux in the loss. Molly Lodoen also added 12 rebounds.
Westhope plays a strong Rugby team in Rugby at 7:15 p.m. on Friday this week as their lone game.
They are 2-12 overall and 0-4 in District 11 play this season.
