A 42-36 win over winless St. John gave the Westhope-Newburg (WN) girls basketball team their second win of the season.

Junior Molly Lodoen had a career-high 30 points as the Sioux clung to a lead late in the contest to earn the victory.

The Woodchucks led early on by holding the Sioux to four first-quarter points. However, the Sioux found their rhythm and scored 19 in the second to go up 23-18 at halftime and never looked back.

Ashlyn Huber and Paige Stratton each added five points for the Sioux in the win.

Alyshia Kom, Krystne Davis and Kourtney Fleetwood each had eight points for the Woodchucks in the loss.

The Sioux’s win celebration wouldn’t last long though as they had to play Velva in the first part of a girls/boys doubleheader in Velva last Friday.

It was rough from the start for WN as Velva cruised to a comfortable lead early on. In fact the Aggies led 23-3 after one quarter and 34-5 by halftime.

The Sioux managed to hit double digits, but eventually fell 60-16 to the Aggies.

Lodoen had seven points and Amber Hall added six points in the losing effort, but the Sioux offense never got going.

The Aggies had three in double figures including Sarah Wherley’s 19 points to lead all scorers.

WN is now 2-9 overall and 0-3 in District 11 play this season.

They continue their trek through the regular season with a pair of district home games. WN play host to Towner-Granville-Upham at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday in Westhope and play the second game of a boys/girls doubleheader against Dunseith on Friday in Westhope.
