A really busy weekend for the Bottineau 19U hockey team resulted in a pair of wins, and a pair of losses.
First in a tough-fought road game last Friday the Stars fell 1-0 on the road to Crosby.
Bottineau bounced back with a pair of shoutout victories over Miles City 12-0 and 13-0 on Saturday.
Finally, on Sunday the Stars lost 4-1 to Watford City.
In Crosby on Friday it was a defensive battle as Crosby goalie T. Johnson and Bottineau’s Jacie Ceglowski duked it out.
Both teams were at a standstill for the first period and a half.
Crosby finally cracked Ceglowski for a goal midway through the second period as Ciara Sorum scored the eventual game-winner.
Bottineau couldn’t find the net and it ended in a 1-0 Crosby win.
Ceglowski was strong in net with 38 saves, while Johnson had 17.
“The girls played a great game but came out on the losing side of a 1-0 game that closely played until the final buzzer,” stated Bottineau head coach Matt Johnson. “The game was very physical and demanding.”
Crosby has yet to lose this season and are 12-0 in State League play.
Bottineau did get two wins on the weekend with a pair of shutouts at home against Miles City. They out scored Miles City 25-0, and out shot them an impressive 93-11.
In game one the Stars topped the Generals 12-0.
Alex Kihle scored the lone goal in the first period as both teams stumbled a bit out of the gates.
Bailey Neubauer scored the first of three goals to kick off the second period though for Bottineau.
Other second period goals for the Stars came from: Karlee McCloud, Shelby Pedie, Paige Vad and Sonya Gilje.
Hunter Bennie also had a pair of goals in the period to put the Stars up 8-0 after two.
Assists in the period came from Megan Olson, Erin Severson, Gilje, Pedie, Vad (two) and Bennie (two).
Severson found the back of the net in the final period as did Vad for the second time.
McCloud assisted on the Severson goal, while Victoria Gullett assisted on Vad’s goal. Neubauer completed her hat trick with two goals to round out the scoring for Bottineau.
Bennnie, Olson and Katelynn Kerslake had assists on Neubauer’s goals.
Bottineau out shot Miles City 47-2 in the contest as Jacie Ceglowksi made both of her stops.
“Miles City has low numbers in the program and is rebuilding,” Johnson stated.
Game two was heavily in favor of the Stars as well as they won 13-0.
This time they started strong as they scored six times in the opening frame.
Shelby Pedie scores a pair of goals in the first. Normally a goalie, Ceglowski played as a skater and scored a goal as well.
Vad, McCloud and Kerslake each had goals in the first as well.
Many assists were credited on the six first-period goals, and those credited included: Cheyenne Sturlaugson, Kerslake, Severson, Olson, Bennie, Gilje, Ceglowski, Gullett (two) and Neubauer (two).
Bottineau exploded for six more goals in the second period to go up 12-0.
Olson scored twice in the period, and she was assisted by Neubauer on both goals, and Vad on the second goal.
Other goals scored in the period came from: Gilje, Neubauer, Severson and Bennie.
Helpers were credited to: Kerslake, Olson, McCloud and Ceglowski.
The final goal was scored by Gullett in the third period. Kerslake assisted on the play that made it a 13-0 shut out win.
Alexis Gullett made nine saves in the shut out victory.
The Stars closed out their weekend with a 4-1 loss to Watford City on Sunday morning.
Bottineau gave up three goals in the first period that eventually sank their ship, two of the goals came short handed for Watford City.
“We had a lot of opportunities, but we just couldn’t get them past,” Johnson said. “We didn’t play good at all the first period, and gave up three, got behind early and just could never get it back.”
“Today would have been a good win, but we just came up short,” Johnson added.
Bottineau cut the lead to 3-1 in the third period as Bennie took passes from McCloud and Severson, but it wasn’t enough.
After the goal Johnson called time out to try and rally the girls.
“We just talked to the girls, told them to keep pushing, and working,” Johnson said. “We needed to get our defense into play more, and that kind of backfired by giving up that goal, but we had to push to try and get more chances.”
That backfire came as a breakaway goal for Watford City that put the game away.
“We just need to finish our chances, we had a lot today, we just have to start putting them in the net,” Johnson added.
Ceglowski had 16 saves in the game as Bottineau out shot Watford City 40-20.
Bottineau (8-7-2) has another tough week ahead of them as they travel to Sidney, Mont. on Friday and Watford City on Saturday. They later play Williston on Saturday.
Their next home game will be at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 1 as they host Sidney.
