Sioux scoop up ninth win over TGU

Westhope-Newburg (WN) used a strong second half to cruise to their second District 11 win with a 59-45 beat down of Towner-Granville-Upham (TGU) last Tuesday in Towner.

Both teams played competitively in the first half, the Sioux having a slight edge, leading 31-30 at halftime.

WN exploded in the second half, and their defense bared down against the Titans and held them to 15 points, while the Sioux scored 17 in the fourth quarter alone to earn the win.

Senior Hunter Braaten was the catalyst for the Sioux offense as he scored 27 points and dished out five assists. Fellow senior Ethan Miller also played a big role grabbing a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Sophomore Chase Conway added eight points and five boards, while junior Chance Kitzman had seven rebounds and six points.

Luke Bacon led the Titans with 11 points, and Colter Thorp and Eli Luna each had 10 in TGU’s second district loss of the season.
With the win the Sioux improved to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in district play on the season.

Next up for WN are a pair of district contests on back-to-back nights. First at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday the Sioux will host Drake-Anamoose, and then on Friday they will travel to Velva to take on the Aggies.

Braaten is now averaging 25.1 points per game this season.
Miller is averaging a double-double per game, as he has 16.1 points and 10.3 rebounds per game averages. He has gotten double-doubles in half of WN’s 12 games.
