Braves get wins over holiday break

A trip east to Minnesota over the holiday break led to two victories for the Bottineau-Rugby (BR) Braves hockey team.
The Braves traveled to participate in a holiday tournament in Wadena, Minn. on Dec. 27-28, in which they downed Breckenridge-Wahpeton (BW) 11-0 and host Wadena-Deer Creek (WDC) 10-3.
BR first took care of BW on Dec. 27 as they cruised to an 11-0 shutout win thanks to seven first-period goals.
Senior Harrison Aide scored a pair of those first-period goals as he was assisted by Noah Grant on both of them. Two more of the goals came from junior Luke Amsbaugh. Aide and Grant earned helpers on the first of the goals, and Aide also assisted on the other.
Cody Bedlion scored a goal with 16:01 left in the first period on a pass from Nigel Hageness. It put BR up 2-0.
Andrew Haberman scored his first career goal with 32 seconds left in the period. Amsbaugh and senior Andrew Hill assisted on the play. The goal put BR up 7-0.
Nick Schaan added a goal late in the second period to extend the lead. Aide earned his third helper on the play.
BR added three more goals in the final frame. Two came from Amsbaugh, who finished with four goals in the contest. Aide assisted on one of the goals, and Grant assisted on the other two.
Shawn Schaan earned a helper on the first of the goals as well.
Grant scored the other goal for BR on an unassisted marker.
Ethan Clements was stout in net for the Braves in his first start and second appearance this season. He stopped all 14 shots that came his way. BR out shot BW 28-14.
The Braves continued their strong play on the road trip as they jumped out to another early lead against WDC on Dec. 28.
BR scored three goals to open the game, which led to a 10-3 victory.
In the opening period the trio of Amsbuagh, Grant and Aide all scored goals. Aide assisted on the other two goals and Amsbaugh also had a pair of assists on the goals. Hill also assisted on the Aide goal.
WDC added a goal late in the first period to cut the lead to 3-1.
The lead would expand more in the second period as the Braves managed to find the back of the net three more times.
First, Amsbaugh netted his second goal of the game with a goal on passes from Grant and Hunter Haakenson.
The other two goals were both scored by Aide, as he earned the hat trick. Hill assisted on both goals.
In the final frame the Braves scored four straight more goals to go up 10-1.
Aide scored two more of the goals for a total of five on the game. Hill assisted on the first goal and Braden Pewe earned a helper on the second.
Amsbaugh scored two goals in the period as well. The first was assisted by Aide and Shawn Schaan, and the second was unassisted.
WDC did scored two goals late in the third period to break the seven-goal streak by BR. Both were scored by Jarrett Pettit, who finished with a hat trick.
Clements was again in net and earned the victory after he stopped 16-of-19 shots.
BR out shot WDC 42-19.
The Braves were scheduled to play against Jamestown and Mandan this past weekend, but the games were postponed due to weather. They will be played at a later date.
This next weekend the Braves (7-2) are scheduled to play on the road against Hazen-Beulah on Friday and Dickinson on Saturday.
