Both the Bottineau Stars and the Westhope-Newburg Sioux kicked off their seasons this past weekend in the Shootout on the Prairie in Minot.
It did not start great for either team as they both lost in Friday’s opener. The Stars fell 50-22 to Dickinson Trinity and the Sioux lost 66-27 to New Town.
The two Bottineau County teams faced each other on Saturday, which guaranteed one of them to go home with a victory.
That team was the Stars as they used a blazing start to cruise past the Sioux 58-42.
Bottineau’s defense stymied the Sioux in the opening quarter, which led to a 14-3 lead after one. The Stars never looked back as they led 34-18 at halftime and maintained that lead throughout the second half.
Bottineau’s scoring was balanced as seniors Courtney Gallagher (12 points) and Danielle McDonald (nine points) led the Stars to victory. Freshman Kelsey Bowers added eight and Stephanie Brenden had seven, but 10 different Stars players notched points in the game.
Lauren Mach led all scorers for the Sioux with 20 points. Amber Hall added nine and Molly Lodoen had eight points, but the Sioux dropped their second straight.
Stars drop opener
The Stars did drop their season opener at the Shootout though as they played a strong Titans squad on Friday.
Dickinson Trinity’s offense exploded for 23 points in the opening quarter, which led to a 14-point lead after one and a 24-point lead at halftime. They stepped up their defense from there as the Stars didn’t score in the third quarter and were held to only 22 points in the game.
Rachel Jahner had 14 and Allana Sickler added 11 points for the Titans in the victory.
Kennedy Olson was the leading scorer for Bottineau with five points. Seven Stars scored in the game.
Bottineau, now 1-1, will be on the road this week as their season continues.
They will travel to Langdon at 7 p.m. on Thursday for a tilt with the Cardinals. The Stars will then have more than a week off before hosting Watford City at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28 in the home opener.
Eagles too much for Sioux
The season opener for the Westhope-Newburg (WN) Sioux at the Shootout on the Prairie in Minot started with a 66-27 loss at the hands of the New Town Eagles.
In the game the Eagles’ Baeleigh Brady had a strong 27 points to help her squad jump out to a 43-13 lead at halftime and parlay that into a 39-point win.
Mach led the Sioux with 10 points and senior Ashlyn Huber had eight points as the Sioux fell.
Jasmyne Big Crow added 11 for the Eagles, who had eight players that scored at least one basket in the game.
The Sioux (0-2) will play at 5:45 p.m. tonight in the first of a girls/boys doubleheader in Mohall against the Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood Mavericks.
WN will host their first game at 7:15 p.m. on Friday as they play Kenmare.
