It was cold in more ways than one for the Dakota College at Bottineau (DCB) football team in last Saturday’s Salt City Bowl in Hutchinson, Kan.

The temperature was below freezing about 17 degrees at kick off, and the Jacks offense was never able to heat up either as they finished with only four total yards of offense in a 57-0 loss to host Hutchinson Community College (HCC).

It was the first bowl game in the six year history for DCB, but for HCC it was their sixth straight bowl victory.

Things began quickly for the Blue Dragons as quarterback Frankie Seurer hooked up with Jabril Soloman for a 60-yard touchdown on their first play from scrimmage 18 second into the contest.

That would prove to be the only offense that HCC needed as they went on to out move the Jacks 600-4, and pitch a 57-0 shut out.

The Dakota College at Bottineau defense made a goal line stand later in the first half that stopped a first and goal from the seven yard line.

However, after a three and out the Blue Dragons got the ball back on the Jacks 22 yard line and scored on a pass from Seurer to Mike Blakely.

HCC then caught the Jacks napping on the kick off and did a sneak onside, which they recoverd.

Six plays later Blakely struck again with a 32-yard rushing touchdown to put HCC up 20-0 late in the first quarter.

The Jacks defense then stepped up several times in the second quarter.

First the Jacks halted an HCC drive inside the five yard line as they forced and recovered a fumble. After another short possession, DCB gave the Blue Dragons good field position once again, but the stiff DCB defense made another goal line stand to force a turnover on downs.

DCB forced another fumble and made another pair of stops deep in their own territory during the quarter.

The only HCC points came on a safety as Jacks running back Jamarr Patterson was tackled in the end zone on a DCB drive that started on the one yard line.

The Jacks remained in the game, trailing 22-0 at halftime, in the first half in part by an undisciplined Blue Dragons team that had 132 penalty yards in the first half.

HCC sharpened up in the second half as they scored four third-quarter touchdowns, one came after a bad snap to Jacks punter Kaelin Mozee gave them the ball at the one yard line.

The next touchdown came on a pass from wideout Chris Murray to fellow wide receiver Jovante Siglar.

The Blue Dragons wrapped up the quarter with a Zack Weekly 33-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown to go up 50-0.

DCB had only three first downs that came from non-penalties, and the first did not come until 10:15 of the third quarter.

The Jacks were only once in HCC territory in the game. That came in the fourth quarter after O’Brea Williams had the presence of mind to pick up a deflected punt and advance it inside the 20 yard line.

The drive stalled though and the Jacks turned the ball over on downs.

Seurer led the Blue Dragons offensively with a 12-for-27 night through the air for 190 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 100 yards rushing on seven carries, including a 89-yard scamper.

Starting quarterback Shazzon Mumphrey of DCB went 4-for-26 for 45 yards and one interception. Their biggest play from scrimmage came on a 32-yard pass play from Mumphrey to Dontrael Brown.

The loss dropped the Jacks to 8-3 on the season, while HCC improved to 8-4.

Only 150 people were in attendance for the game at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson, Kan. It was 17 degrees at kickoff and the game was on television, as well as webcast online.

The Jacks will have another opportunity to make a bowl game next season when they move over to the Minnesota College Athletic Conference.
