The Bottineau Fire Department was called to two fires this past week as it snowed and temperatures dropped during the first cold spell of the season.

According to Eric Nostdahl, fire chief for the Bottineau Fire Department, the fire department was called to Terry Espe’s house on 4th Street and Alexander for a garage fire and to Todd Sather’s home for a bedroom fire on Thompson Street.

Espe’s fire was apparently caused by a wood stove. No one was injured in the fire, but the garage was lost due to structural damage of the building.

Sather’s fire is undetermined at the moment, but it started in an upstairs bedroom which received fire damage. The remainder of the home suffered smoke damage.

No one was injuried in the Sather fire.

In the wintertime, Nostdahl stated that individuals should keep a close eye on their chimneys and make sure that people do not overload electrical outlets, which are two primary reasons for winter fires in homes.

During recent fire alarms, the firemen have struggled with residents not yielding while they are trying to make their way to the fire department and fires. Nostdahl is asking that individuals yield for the firemen when they are called to fires.
