After starting out winless in their first seven games the Dakota College at Bottineau (DCB) hockey team appeared to have turned a corner with three wins in their last four games.
They hit a bit of a speed bump as rival Williston State College (WSC) beat them 6-2 last Tuesday to stifle some of their momentum.
It did not look that way early on though, as DCB held strong defensively and scored the only goal in the first period as sophomore Reed Loucks netted his third goal of the season with 47 seconds left.
DCB’s scoring leader James Kelly assisted on the play, his fourth assist and 14th point of the year.
The lead did not last long for the Jacks as the Tetons scored in just more than a minute into the second frame.
Al Maul scored for WSC as they evened the score.
The score would soon be uneven as the Tetons added two more goals, another one from Maul and one from Henry Gutierrez.
The Jacks drew to within one goal shortly thereafter as Lucas Lindholm scored at 5:31. It was the third goal and sixth point of the year for the sophomore. Freshman Ethan Hicks earned his second helper of the year on the play.
It was all Tetons from there on out though as they scored once more in the second on a Devan Turcotte goal, and twice more in the third.
DCB was out shot heavily 53-21 in the contest, it was WSC’s sixth win of the year, while the Jacks dropped to 3-9.
DCB goaltender Ryan Miner finished with 47 saves in the loss.
“We played a good road game but ran out of gas in the third,” stated Jacks head coach Travis Rybchinski. “They were fast and on the big ice we got caught out there in the second period on some long shifts that cost us some goals.”
“I thought we battled until the end and I was happy with the effort,” Rybchinski added.
The Jacks are off this weekend and their next action will be at 7:30 p.m. next Tuesday, Dec. 10 when they host Minot State University.
It will be the only match up between the Beavers and the Jacks in Bottineau this season.
