The Lumbercat trophy headed back to Wahpeton last Saturday, as the North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) were able to upset Dakota College at Bottineau (DCB) 30-21 last Saturday.
The Jacks, who received votes in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national polls this past week, were ahead for the majority of the contest.
DCB struck first blood in the opening quarter as running back Jamarr Patterson powered his way into the end zone.
The Jacks defense held the Wildcats at bay until late in the second quarter, when they gave up a big pass play that evened the game at 7-7.
“The Jacks got off to a good start and grabbed an early 7 to 0 lead,” stated Jacks head coach Tim Pfeifer. “The Jacks had a couple very good scoring opportunities in the second quarter and could not get the ball in the end zone.”
DCB did find the end zone in the third quarter to take a 13-7 lead, which they held for most of the third frame.
However, the Wildcats had a comeback on their mind and they did as they scored and went up 16-13.
NDSCS scored twice more in the fourth, while the Jacks could only score once more, which led to the 30-21 final score.
“The Jacks offense really struggled getting anything going consistently,” Pfeifer stated. “At times the Jacks moved the ball and at other times the offense really struggled.”
Defensively the Jacks allowed 411 yards through the air, but held the ground game to just 51 yards on 23 attempts.
Isaac Flomo had five grabs for 119 yards and two touchdowns for NDSCS. Qurann Al-hameed had one of the touchdowns on a 64-yard pass play from Jared Etienne.
“The defense had a good first half only giving up one big play,” Pfeifer stated. “In the second half we gave up three big plays that all lead to scores for them.”
DCB dropped to 7-2 on the season with the loss, which was their first since they lost to Iowa Central back on Sept. 7.
The Jacks will close out their season on Saturday with a 2 p.m. tilt against Trinity Bible College in Ellendale, N.D.
DCB beat the Lions 20-6 in the first game of the season back on Aug. 24 in Bottineau.
