The Dakota College at Bottineau (DCB) volleyball team closed out both their regular season and postseason this past week.
They lost to the North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) in Bottineau last Wednesday to cap off the regular season. The Ladyjacks then ran into a buzz saw at the sub region tournament in Bismarck on Saturday as they had to face Williston State College (WSC) twice.
The Tetons swept DCB in both matches, despite close games throughout.
On Saturday morning’s first match for the Ladyjacks they played the Tetons. WSC swept the Ladyjacks in straight sets. In all three sets the Ladyjacks played right with the Tetons before falling behind late and losing 25-16, 25-16 and 25-18.
Tetons setter Jaden Lynch had 39 assists and their top hitter was Mariah Jobb, who had 11 kills.
After the Tetons fell to eventual champion Bismarck State College in their second match, they were once again paired up against the Ladyjacks for the honor to play the Mystics in the sub region title game on Sunday.
The match started out in favor of the Tetons as they easily took down the Ladyjacks 25-11 in set one.
However, the Ladyjacks fought back and led for a lot of the second set. However, the Tetons made a strong comeback late and upended DCB 25-23. WSC made quick work of the Ladyjacks in the final set as DCB was unable to find their groove and fell 25-8.
The second sweep was led by the Tetons’ Alanna Watt and Ali Fritz, who each had 10 kills. Lynch had 40 assists and Stephanie Quintis had 16 digs.
The Ladyjacks also lost to Division I NDSCS last Wednesday in the final regular season and final home game of the volleyball season.
The Wildcats took care of the Ladyjacks in straight sets. DCB got off to a great start in the first set and led for a good portion of it, but then the Wildcats scratched back and earned a 25-15 win.
NDSCS took set two as well with a 25-12 victory. The final set was again closer, but the Wildcats emerged victorious with a 25-16 win to earn the sweep.
Sophomore Ashleigh Aufforth had 18 assists and eight digs in her final volleyball game in Bottineau. Fellow sophomore Krista Lesmann had five kills and a team-best 11 digs in the loss. Justine Nordin added a team-high seven kills and eight digs in the loss.
Morgan Hensch led the Wildcats wtih 12 kills, and setter Megan Kolness had 24 assists. Callie Sinclair had five aces from the service line to help lead NDSCS to the win.
“Wins and losses are valued by many programs, but when it’s all said and done what is more memorable are the struggles we overcome during a season,” stated Ladyjacks head coach Cory Fehringer. “The fact this team has stuck together over a span of tough stretches speaks volumes of their character.”
The trio of losses concluded the Ladyjacks season with a record of 6-23. They lose five sophomores in setter Ashleigh Aufforth, middle hitter Leah Parizek, outside hitter Krista Lesmann, Dariann Freer and Halle Schumann. They were all honored before last Wednesday’s match against the Wildcats.
