The Newburg-Westhope Eagles were on the losing end of a tight match for the first time this season as they fell in five sets to Burke County last Monday night in Bowbells.

The Eagles started the match strongly with a 25-22 victory in the first set.

However, the Titans fought back with a 25-18 victory in set two, which was not unlike the Eagles’ previous two five-set matches, where they won every odd set enroute to victories.

This match proved to be different though as the Titans took set three in a 25-21 score.

It was never say die for Newburg-Westhope in the contest though as they were able to muster enough for a 25-23 win in the fourth set.
The fifth and final set proved too much for the Eagles to handle as the Titans edged Newburg-Westhope 15-13 to earn the home win.

Lauren Mach came up big in the losing effort for the Eagles. The junior finished with team-bests in blocks (10), kills (nine) and aces (three). She also added 13 digs.

Also strong for the Eagles was Maddy Lodoen, also a junior. She finished with a team-high 29 digs, and also added seven kills and four blocks.

The Eagles dropped to 8-14 on the season with the loss.
Newburg-Westhope hosts Sawyer at 7:15 p.m. tonight for their final District 11 match of the season.

The Eagles then have a road match against Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood on Thursday and a game at home, in Westhope, on Monday against Berthold. Their final regular season match will be next Tuesday, Oct. 29 as they host Rolette-Wolford in Newburg.

The District 11 tournament begins on Oct. 31 in Towner.
