My newest hero in the world is a guy by the name of Chris Cox. If over the past week you do not know who Chris Cox is, he is the guy from Mount Pleasant, S.C., who has taken it upon himself to cut grass and cleans up the memorials in Washington, D.C. as the federal government is shutdown.

Chris isn’t hard to identify, he has bushy curly hair and a beard; pushes an orange cart with a lawn mower, chain saw and garbage bags attached to it; and flies a South Carolina flag no matter where he goes, whether he is cutting grass or pushing his cart, the flag is flying.

A first glance of Chris, one wonders if Chris just crawled out of the Alaskan outback where he spent the summer living off the land, or if he is one of the forgotten hippy children of the sixties. But, appearance means nothing, it’s where a person’s heart lies that means everything, and once you hear Chris speak, one realizes this is a great man who loves his country, and it makes an individual like myself hope Chris will never changes who he is and that he will continue on his quest.

Chris is a simple man, with a big heart and pride in his country. All he wants is to make sure our national capital looks tip top shape while our nation’s politicians can’t seem to get their act together. He is man who is working hard in making sure that our capital’s memorials and grounds are being kept up while the politicians inside our capitol building are making our nation look rather unattractive.

Deep inside me, I wish Chris wasn’t a Steward of the land, but a politician, because if we had more individuals like Chris in Washington I get the feeling our government wouldn’t be shut down right now.

During the last election, all I heard from politicians was that I should vote for them because he or she was a person who was intelligent, caring and “a person who can get the job done in our nation’s capital.” And yet, our nation stands in a government shutdown because those who said they could “get the job done” have failed us as a country because they simply can’t come to conciliating positions to keep our country going. Instead, they call each other names, make fun of one another and make threats to each other like school yard bullies.

And yet, here is Chris Cox, minding his own business, working hard and making sure our nation’s capital is looking clean and prosperous.

Our nation’s leaders could learn a lesson from Chris. Perhaps our politicians should grab a rake or a garbage bag and get out and help Chris and learn what it is like to be a true and pure patriot of our country, who simply works to get the issue at hand done and looking good.
