The Dakota College at Bottineau Ladyjacks volleyball team went into a hostile and tough environment last Wednesday as they played the Bismarck State College Mystics.

The Mystics, who are 18-3 overall and currently leading the MonDak Conference, swept the Ladyjacks.

“They are the longest, most athletic and overall skilled team we have played and may possibly ever play this year,” stated Ladyjacks coach Cory Fehringer. “There is no doubt our overall objective is to be competitive with BSC, and we had an opportunity to witness what areas we are struggling with at the current moment.”

The first set was all Mystics as they gained a 1-0 advantage with a 25-9 win. The Ladyjacks improved each set, but were unable to get the upper hand in any set falling 25-13 and 25-18 in the second and third sets.

“We always seem to get better match by match but that habit needs to be corrected,” Fehringer stated. “This was a team loss through and through with no blame to be placed on anyone, or anything specific.”

Krissi Lesmann had a team-best five kills, and Justine Nordin had 11 digs for the Ladyjacks in the loss.

The Mystics were led by Leslie Beaudoin who had 10 kills and two solo blocks. Casey Reamann had a game-best 12 digs.

Sophomore Ashleigh Aufforth notched double digits in assists with 10 and added two stuff blocks and seven digs in the loss.

“The team that showed up at BSC was not the team who had been playing well up to this point, and we need to regroup as we move forward,” Fehringer stated. “One thing we must do in life is be able to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and understand what mistakes we made leading up to a poor performance. I believe our girls are good enough players, great teammates and will respond like winners.”

The loss dropped the Ladyjacks to 3-10 overall and 1-3 in MonDak play.

Despite the loss Fehringer believes the team is farther along then they were at this time last season.

“Our team is more talented, more skilled and overall better position by position than last years group, who finished in the final four of the Region Tournament,” Fehringer stated.

DCB plays several matches this week beginning with a match up against North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) in Wahpeton on Wednesday.

On Friday and Saturday they will be playing four matches again in Wahpeton at the Wildcat Classic hosted by NDSCS.

Their next home match will be at 7 p.m. on Oct. 2 against Williston State College.
