Two more exhibition wins this past week kept the Dakota College at Bottineau (DCB) Ladyjacks undefeated this fall.

DCB’s softball team traveled to Bismarck to take on the Bismarck State Mystics last week.

The Ladyjacks shutout the Mystics in game one as freshman Taylor Glass tossed a six-inning gem.

Glass allowed only two base runners for the entire six innings, as she struck out eight, walked none and kept her earned run average (ERA) at 0.00 for the fall season.

“Again we got a great pitching performance from Taylor and again we played very well defensively behind her,” stated Ladyjacks coach Mike Getzloff.

On offense the Ladyjacks scored three runs in the third and four more in the sixth to put away BSC.

Heidi Riley, Amanda Cain and Jess Carson all went 2-for-4 in the contest. Kathrin Jetty added a double.

“Offensively Jess Carson had a big game, coming through with a run-scoring single in the third, and then followed it up with a three-run double in the sixth frame,” Getzloff stated.

The Ladyjacks cruised to another victory in game two, as they made quick work of the Mystics in a 14-2 win in five innings.

The game started out really strong for DCB as they batted around in the first inning and pushed past nine runs in the first. They added two more in the fourth and three in the fifth to score 14 runs on eight hits.

Riley was 2-for-3 in the game with a double, three runs scored and three stolen bases. Cain rapped a single, a triple and drove in two runs. Bethany Colman came up big for DCB as well. The sophomore went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in (RBI).

Despite the runs, Getzloff still believed that the Ladyjacks could have swung the bats better.

“We didn’t hit the ball as well as I thought we should have, but we did work BSC’s pitchers for seven walks,” Getzloff stated. “We received good offensive effort from both Riley and Cain. Riley showed off her base running skills and Cain showed some power, hitting a triple,” Getzloff stated.

On the mound Danielle Gibson gave up runs in each of the first two innings, but settled down and allowed only three hits in the contest.
In five innings, she allowed only one earned run, walked two and struck out one.

In all Getzloff was happy with the trip down to Bismarck.

“It was a good trip to BSC and it is nice to be sitting at 4-0 on the year,” Getzloff stated. “Although we are 4-0, the games we have played have  shown us that we need to work on improving in a number of areas.”

“I’m really pleased with our pitching and our defense, but we need to do a lot of work on our base running and have better at-bats,” Getzloff added.

Getzloff is glad the softball team is getting in some fall contests. They have two more against Lake Region State College scheduled, and hope to maybe add more.

“Fall ball is all about learning what your team’s strong and weak areas are,” Getzloff stated. “It gives us a good idea of what we need to work on for our regular season, which starts in March.”
