Sophomore Chase Conway had his coming out part this past week in a 52-12 win over the Dunseith Dragons in Glenburn.

The Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn tailback carried the ball nine times for 167 yards and three touchdowns in the first half.

Quarterback Hunter Braaten scored twice on the ground for the Sioux and Tanner Rauschenberger had a one-yard plunge to put the Sioux up 46-0 at halftime.

Braaten ran five times for 67 yards and was 2-for-5 for 32 yards and one interception through the air.

The win came one week after the Sioux lost their first game of the season 30-6 to Divide County.

“We had a kind of rigorous week of practice, because we needed to get out and get more physical, because Divide showed us that,” Nesvold said. “Even our front line right way, they are missing lot, but we wanted them to play physical and they did.”

Defensively the Sioux forced four fumbles and sacked the quarterback three times in the win.

Chance Kitzman had a strong defensive game with both a forced and recovered fumble and nine total tackles.

Conway had 10 total tackles and two pass deflections in the win. Brennon Lovell had a two-point conversion run, and made 16 total tackles as well.

In the second half the Sioux played mostly with second-stringers.
That allowed the Dragons to find the end zone twice.

WNG did score once more in the second half though as freshman Trent Marquart, who ran back a kickoff 90 yards to extend the Sioux lead.

He also made eight tackles on defense. Several second and third string players saw playing time in the second half, which Nesvold said was good.

“They get over that wide-eyed look, and they started to enjoy it and have some fun, and they got that confidence and wanted to go back in the game,” Nesvold said about the bench players who got playing time. “We’ve basically only got one JV game, so this was like a JV half for some of those kids, so it was good for them.”

The Sioux, now 4-1, cannot relish the victory too much though, because they have first place Towner-Granville-Upham coming to town next Friday.

“We got them at home, which helps, and we just have to come out and play sound football,” Nesvold said. “We need to get things strapped on and ready to rock and roll.”

WNG and the Titans clash at 7:15 p.m., on Friday in Westhope for the Westhope homecoming game.
