A 95-yard touchdown run by Hunter Braaten was all that kept Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn (WNG) from being shutout in a trip to play Divide County (DC).
The Maroons, who were runners-up in nine-man in 2012, did most everything right in a 30-6 win over the Sioux in Crosby.
At the time of Braaten’s big return the Sioux were trailing 18-0 as Isaac Jacobs had just scored his third touchdown on a 26 yard run. The Maroon quarterback had two passing touchdowns in the first half.
However, the Sioux were unable to use the momentum from the kick return and Jacobs all but sealed it with another impressive touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
DC’s Chase Jacobson returned a fumble 75 yards for another score to make it the final score of 30-6.
Jacobs finished with 155 yards rushing on 23 carries for the Maroons.
The loss dropped the Sioux out of first place in Region 3, and left them with 3-1 overall and region record.
The Sioux will try to rebound next week with a home game in Glenburn against the 0-4 Dunseith Dragons.
