The Dakota College at Bottineau (DCB) Ladyjacks swept the Lake Region State Lady Royals in an exhibition doubleheader last Wednesday in Bottineau.
The softball games were played as part of the homecoming festivities at DCB, and to showcase the new freshman that will be on the team in the spring.
That talent was on prominent display in game one as the Ladyjacks defeated LRSC 8-0 in five innings thanks to a two-hit shutout thrown by freshman Taylor Glass.
Glass struck out nine and walked only two en route to the five-inning shutout.
“Glass was overpowering,” stated DCB coach Mike Getzloff.
Offensively DCB rapped nine hits.
Heidi Riley, a newcomer, had a single, double and scored twice while driving in one run.
Sophomore Bethany Colman had two singles and two runs batted in (RBI).
Freshman Katharine Jetty had a two-RBI double.
“(I was) very pleased with our effort,” Getzloff stated. “(We) played well defensively and came through with timely hits.”
Game two went nearly as well for DCB as they used a five-run fourth inning to get another eight-run victory, 10-2.
Danielle Gibson, a sophomore, earned the win on the hill as she went five innings and allowed only two runs on two hits. She struck out three and walked two.
“Gibson did a good job of holding the Royals to one earned run,” Getzloff stated.
Freshman Ashley Ryan and Jetty each had two RBI in the win. Seven different Ladyjacks smacked hits in the contest. Riley and Gibson each had a double.
“Sweeping Lake Region was a great way to start the fall season,” Getzloff stated. “It should help us gain confidence, especially the young freshman.”
Ten out of 12 DCB players had hits in the doubleheader.
DCB’s pitching was also strong as they struck out 13 and walked six.
“Our pitchers threw the ball pretty well,” Getzloff stated. “Their control was impressive.”
Riley was a strong defensive player throughout the games according to Getzloff.
DCB went 7-15 last season, but advanced to the Region XIII Tournament for the first time in program history. They return several players from last year’s squad.
