A glance at the scores in a 3-0 sweep of Trinity Bible College would make it look like a smooth victory for the Dakota College at Bottineau Ladyjacks volleyball team.

That was not exactly the case according to head coach Cory Fehringer.

Though the Ladyjacks won 25-19, 25-17 and 25-13, Fehringer gave a lot of credit to the Lions, who he said played strongly.

“Although we were able to sweep Trinity Bible it was much more difficult than the score may appear as,” Fehringer stated. “The Lions did a good job of battling all night.”

He pointed specifically to the beginning of the match, and improvement in beginning matches is something that DCB needs to work on.

“We continue to have issues opening up the match with solid play, but appear to get stronger as the sets get deeper,” Fehringer stated. “Once we learn to start the match the same way we finish the match there is a good chance of us playing good volleyball down the stretch.”

However, a strong crowd willed the Ladyjacks to victory during the homecoming match, which was their first win at home this season.
Fehringer believed the team hit two of their three objectives in the win.

“We stress passing, serving and communication as the main keys for us to be successful,” Fehringer stated. “Our serving was below the standards that we set but communication, and passing was above average.”

He was especially impressed with freshman Savannah Bruce’s abilities when she took the floor.

“Offensively the team exploded when freshman Savannah Bruce got into the action,” Fehringer stated. “By far it was the best performance of the year for Bruce as she get more comfortable playing middle.”

The crowd was numerous and intense, especially in the student section, something that Fehringer continues to be impressed with.

“Once again our crowd was incredible throughout the match as the student section was able to improve their performance, which was tough to do based on our last home match,” Fehringer stated. “There is no doubt The Woodshed has been as entertaining of environment you will find in the Mon-Dak Conference, let alone Junior College Volleyball.”

Coming off the win the Ladyjacks looked to do some damage in five matches at an invite hosted by Northland Community and Technical College.

The Ladyjacks did not find too much success though as they went 1-4 over the weekend.

DCB played three matches last Friday, going 2-1. The first two matches did not go the Ladyjack’s way as they were swept both matches.

Minnesota State Tech College won 25-15 and 25-19 in match one, while Fon Du Lac won 25-15 and 25-19 over DCB in match two.
DCB rebounded with a three-set win over Itasca in Friday’s final match.

However, DCB was swept twice more on Saturday.
The Ladyjacks fell to Northland Tech and Mesabi Range in their final two matches on Saturday.
