Jacks flatten Jaguars at homecoming

Lumberjacks football fans were treated to quite a show last Saturday at the homecoming football game.
That’s because the Dakota College at Bottineau (DCB) football team took it to the visiting Cole College Jaguars in a 69-32 victory.
DCB moved the ball early, especially through the air and they took a 21-6 lead after the first quarter.
“The game plan was to get on them early, attack, attack, attack, and not get complacent,” said sophomore receiver Mitchell Jules. “That’s what we did in the first half, and we did a good job.”
After a rain-soaked halftime the Jacks kept piling on the points.
Attitudes between the two teams were heated throughout the contest, which led to several unsportsmanlike penalties on both teams.
“We were happy we scored a lot of points, but it was just one of those games that was ugly, that was probably the best way to describe it,” Jacks head coach Tim Pfeifer said. “We did a lot of good things and some disappointing things, but hopefully we get better.”
The Jacks finished the game with 482 yards, 343 of that through the air.
Starting quarterback Shazzon Mumphrey was a big part of the passing attack as he went 9-for-15 for 318 yards and five scores. He also had 41 yards on the ground including a touchdown rush.
Mumphrey spread the ball around as eight different receivers had receptions, and none had more than two catches. Touchdowns came from Dontrael Brown (95 yards), Charles Johnson, Deon Carter (46 yards), Delqwan Jackson and Jonathan Parks.
“We had guys running wide open all over the field today, half the time we hit him, half the time we missed them, so when we hit them we did OK, and the half the time we missed them was disappointing,” Pfeifer said.
Conversely the defense held the Jaguars offense to 243 total yards, limiting them to 26 yards on the ground.
DCB also forced six turnovers by picking off four passes and recovering two fumbles.
Evans Norris was strong on the defensive side of the ball recording two picks.
Nathaniel Robinson and Kayshawn Duncan each had interceptions as well.
Jules felt like the Jacks played as one in the win.
“I thought we played well today,” Jules said. “We played together like a team.”
Pfeifer was clear to point out the mistakes as well though.
“We still make a lot of dumb mistakes, we’re not very smart a lot of times,” Pfeifer said. “That’s disappointing because they’ve been told many times.”
Perhaps the best offensive performer for the Jacks though was running back Jamarr Peterson, who had 128 total yards (94 on the ground) and scored three touchdowns, two on the ground and one through the air.
Special teams got in the mix when Carter returned a punt for a touchdown.
Kicker Caleb McClinton hit 7-of-10 point after attempts in the win.
The win pushed the Jacks to 2-1 on the season.
It will be short week for DCB as they travel next Thursday to play Mayville JV at 6 p.m.
In order to get better Jules (who was also homecoming king) had a few pieces of advice.
“We just need to keep improving, getting the chemistry down and work hard,” Jules said.
Pfeifer too had some thoughts on what to do as the season continues.
“We just made a couple hard, tough rules and maybe we’ll just have to eliminate some guys,” Pfeifer said.
