The Dakota College at Bottineau Ladyjacks volleyball team traveled to Williston last Thursday for a match against the rival Williston State Tetons.

DCB was swept by the home team, but the close scored indicated an improving Ladyjacks team. The Tetons took the first set 25-20. They then ran away with the second set in a 25-14 win. DCB fought back in the final set, but ultimately fell 25-21.

Despite the sweep head coach Cory Fehringer was optimistic about the Ladyjacks play.

“It was clear our volleyball program is becoming a stronger competitor in comparison to our conference,” Fehringer stated. “Of course we would have liked to push additional sets but the truth is WSC is a difficult place to play, a good team, along with the fact the majority of our team still being unfamiliar with level of play necessary to be successful.”

Fehringer said the team is definitely beginning to learn things about themselves.

“We are learning together, growing together, and recognizing areas needed to improve in order for us to become a legitimate contender regardless of the opponent,” Fehringer stated. “One area that has become evident for our Ladyjacks is the simple fact the margin for error is so small, and the match can change so quickly based upon a couple of mental errors or poor decision.”

One thing that the Ladyjacks need to hammer down is a consistent lineup according to Fehringer. He is pleased with sophomore Ashleigh Aufforth’s setting abilities, as well as hitters Krissi Lesmann and Justine Nordin. Other players he thinks are starting to learn their places including Leah Parizek, who is in a new position, as well as Tessa Walters and Savannah Bruce. Lauren Pederson and Halle Schumann have been getting the majority of DCB’s digs.

Another positive for Fehringer is the DCB bench.

“With those young Ladyjacks who have not received much playing time, I must say they have been extremely impressive accepting the role of great teammates and supporting the players ahead of them,” Fehringer stated. “It can be a tough transition from high school, but I truly believe each one of them plays a huge factor in the direction of our program.”

DCB fell to 1-5 overall on the season with the loss.
Their next match will be at 5:30 p.m., tomorrow at home against Trinity Bible College.
