It is hard enough to go down to Velva and play against the Aggies, but to do it without a lead scoring threat makes it that much tougher.
That’s because the Aggies have won nine state titles since 1997, with their last title coming in 2010.

The Bottineau Braves faced the Aggies last Friday without senior receiver and returner Harrison Aide, who broke his wrist and will be gone for the season.

Aide broke his wrist in the Braves’ season opener. He planned on getting a cast on the wrist and playing through the injury, but a second x-ray revealed a second break apart from the first break.
Doctors advised shutting down for the rest of the season in order for Aide to be healthy for hockey season.

Also out were sophomore receivers Ethan Jensen (broken arm) and Parker Engelhard (concussion).

Thus left the Braves in hostile territory, against a tough team and without three receivers.

Velva took care of the visiting Braves 49-0 last Friday.

They did most of their work in the second quarter, where they scored four times to take a 36-0 lead at halftime.

Michael Thingstad scored three times on the ground in the second quarter alone. Other touchdowns came on a 79-yard pass play from Drew Effertz to Brad Dean, and a 63 yard rush by Effertz.

The Aggies scored once more in each of the third and fourth quarters. Effertz tossed a 53-yard touchdown to Hunter Schreiner for a score in the third and in the fourth Isaac Effertz ran in a touchdown from 11 yards.

The loss dropped the Braves to 0-2 on the season. They fell 47-34 in their season opener against North Prairie on Aug. 27.

Bottineau’s next game will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday at home against Lewis and Clark/Our Redeemers. The Bombers are coming off of a 36-8 loss to Harvey.

The game is being played on a Thursday due to referee shortages in the area.
