A former Dakota College at Bottineau basketball player’s life was tragically ended on Friday, June 21 after he was involved in a multiple-vehicle accident on U.S Highway 2 near Stanley.

Tyler Fischer, who played two years for the Jacks from 2009-11, was involved in the crash, which was blamed partially on heavy fog.

Fischer’s car was one that collided with other vehicles including an oil tanker, which exploded. The explosion caused other vehicles to burn for hours. This all according to a story in The Dickinson Press.

Fischer was well-liked at DCB, and was known as a hard-working, good kid.

“He had a great work ethic and he was one of those kids that worked hard in the classroom and on the court,” said DCB athletic director Scott Johnson. “He made a big impact on us.”

Johnson was surprised and saddened by the news of Fischer’s death.

“It was really a tragic thing that happened,” Johnson said. “It was really unfortunate.”

Fischer played under then-head coach Ken Keysor and was a starter for the Jacks.

Fischer started 22 games for the Jacks in 2010-11 as a sophomore. He averaged 2.9 points and 2.6 rebounds per game on 47.7 percent shooting. He also blocked 18 shots, second best on the team.

“He was really a nice young man, a great student, a good athlete and he was just a benefit for us to have for a couple of years and certainly made an impact on us,” Johnson said.

Fischer’s funeral was held in his hometown of Bowman, N.D. last Thursday.
