With oil activity increasing in Bottineau County the first man-camp has been set-up in Souris where there is presently a number of wells being drilled in that area.

According to Souris City Council member, Les Patterson, the council voted unanimously in favor of allowing a man-camp to be set-up in Souris.

“Our area needs some funding,” Patterson said. “We were not real excited about letting a man-camp into town, but we are going to give it a try. We are going to start out small and slow and see how it goes.

“We have placed rules into the agreement,” Patterson added. “There will be no recklessness in town and if the men cause trouble they will be kicked out.”

CanElson, a drilling company out of Mohall, has placed the man-camp in Souris. The city has allowed two trailers, which are located on the southwest side of town. The company has 10 men staying in the trailers and the company men will be alternating shifts with five men on and five men off while working in the oil field.

The men are expected to be in Souris for two months, but could go as long as one year.
