Bottineau’s Middle School was turned into a space lab the past two weeks to teach third through six graders about the universe and cosmos that surround us.
“The theme this year has been Space Camp and the kids have been learning about outer space, constellations, the Milky Way and the planets,” said Arliss Fugere, one of four Bottineau educators who are the instructors at the camp. “The kids have also conducted presentations, made an alien and wrote a story about their alien, shot off rockets and conducted astronaut training.”
Along with the fun, interactive activities on space, the students were also given the opportunity to be part of Star Lab, an inflatable lab in the shape of a dome which grants kids the opportunity to see the many different types of constellations which shine on the ceiling of the Star Lab dome. The Star Lab was operated by Jason Davis of Belcourt’s Turtle Mountain Community College.
For Addison Jelleberg she has enjoyed Space Camp these past two weeks.
“I like science,” Jelleberg said. “It’s been really fun learning about space.”
Jelleberg pointed out that during the past two weeks she and the other kids at space camp broke into six different groups where they created presentation on space, which included symposiums on astronauts; inner planets, meteors, the moon, constellations, the outer planets in deep space and space travel.
On Friday morning, the kids’ parents were invited to Space Camp and were given tours of the camp and the crafts they created, along with a noon hour meal where all the food had space names like black olives which were called Black Holes.
For Jelleberg, she doesn’t know if she wants a career in the space field, but she stated that after Space Camp she is considering it.
“I don’t know what I want to be yet, but Space Camp has made me think about it (a career in the field).”
Instructors with Fugere who taught Space Camp included Denise Aide, Bridgit Berg and Angie Radtke. Space Camp was sponsored by 21st Century through a grant.
