The Bottineau County Trotter 4-H Club hosted an open horse show last Sunday at the Bottineau County Fairgrounds.

Saturday nights rain helped the turnout of the event according to coordinator Robin Williams.

“The turnout is very good compared to other shows and due to the fact that we got a bunch of rain last night,” Williams said.

The event, which is part of the North Central Horse Association (NCHA) circuit, brought dozens of competitors, horses and trailers into the Millennium Building.

For the trotters the event provides a bit of a warm up for their big event that is part of the fair and is held today.

“We look at this like a practice for the 4-H club for their show on Tuesday, which is part of the fair,” Williams said

Horse shows involve riders in an area performing different commands and maneuvers with their horses.

Many of the contestants are children and young adults.

“It teaches them how to handle their horses,” Williams said. “They really have to work with their horses in order to get through all these different kinds of maneuvers and lead changes.”

“That takes a lot of working with the horse,” Williams added.

Williams also said that the events are a good way to spend time and meet new and fun people, who aren’t afraid to lend a helping hand.

“This is a fun group of people,” Williams said. “Every body helps each other, and everybody gets along with each other, so if anybody is ever interested in getting a horse, this is a good thing to come and see and talk to people.”

“It’s very easy to get into, and everybody will help you one way or another,” Williams added.

The sport takes a lot of training, skill and most of all patience.
