A local veteran has been elected to a state command post in North Dakota only two years after joining the military organization and looks forward in serving in the leadership position.

Keith Peterson was elected to be the second vice commander of the North Dakota State AmVets Department.

“I feel very honored to be elected to this position,” Peterson said. “I feel that my nomination for this position was made possible by the achievements and accomplishments of our post.”

Peterson was born in Kenmare, ND, raised in Tioga and attended college at Dickinson State College and UND-Williston where he holds a degree as a physical therapy assistant.

He served in the U.S. Army and served in Desert Storm. While on active duty Peterson achieved the rank of SSGE-6.

Peterson is a member of Bottineau Veteran’s of Foreign War Post 8688 and has served the Post as an adjutant and Bottineau’s AmVets Post 25 where he served as the first vice commander and is currently its commander.

Peterson stated that AmVets has a great deal to offer veterans.

“AmVets is a nationally chartered veterans’ service organization started by World War II veterans for the purpose of helping veterans,” Peterson said. “Enrollment in AmVets is not as limited as it is in the American Legion or VFW.

“Our Post started two years ago and we have grown to over 60 members and are continuing to grow,” Peterson added.

Veterans, who wish to learn more about AmVets, contact Peterson at petersonkeith96@yahoo.com or by stopping at the Memorial Hall on Fifth Street and Thompson Monday through Friday from 8 to 11 a.m. to talk to local veterans who are there for commodity and to grant information for veterans who have questions.
