The Dakota College at Bottineau (DCB) women’s basketball team announced this past week two big things.
First the Ladyjacks announced that sophomore Shakira Walker signed a letter of intent to play Division II college basketball at Kentucky State. DCB also announced its latest recruit for 2013-14 in five-foot, four-inch guard Haley Sabe of Bowman County.
Walker moves on
After two strong years at DCB Walker, a guard, signed with Division II Kentucky State University.
“We are extremely pleased and happy for Shakira as she takes the next big step in her basketball career,” stated Ladyjacks head coach Wayne Johnson. “She’s a very athletic player who will fit in well with Kentucky State’s up-tempo style of basketball.”
Walker, who played point guard for DCB, averaged 11 points as a freshman and 14.7 points per game as a sophomore. Despite missing 13 games after an injury in January, Walker battled back to get back to help the Ladyjacks win a Region XIII title.
“She had a great career for us and leaves big shoes to fill at the point position. Shakira was definitely having another all-conference year before missing most of the conference season with an injury,” Johnson stated. “ We are proud to have had Shakira in our program and are excited to follow her career at the DII level.”
The Kentucky State Thorobreds were 15-12 overall and 11-5 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
Jacks sign Sabe
DCB recently announced the signing of their fifth recruit for the 2013-14 season in Sabe.
Sabe was a guard on the Bowman County Bulldogs in her high school career.
“Haley will be a nice addition to the Ladyjack program,” Johnson stated. “She appears to be a very intelligent, hard working player. She possesses solid fundamental skills and seems to have a good understanding of the game.”
As a senior Sabe averaged 8.8 points, four assists, three rebounds and two assists on her way to her second consecutive All-Region selection. She was also a three-time All-District selection and was named the team’s best defensive player for those three years.
“Haley has a quick release from the three point line and we expect her to contribute offensively from the perimeter,” Johnson stated. “She also is not afraid to attack the basket and should be able to get to the line to utilize her free throwing shooting skill.”
Sabe is the daughter of Judy and Kent Harding of Crosby, N.D. and Jim Sabe of Scranton, N.D.
“Haley is a very good student and exhibits excellent character traits,” Johnson stated. “We expect her be a very good contributor to DCB and Ladyjacks basketball.”
Sabe joins Savnnah Bruce, Whitney Brandvold, Tessa Walters and Zirahuen Hernandez as recruits for next season.
