The Class B boy’s golf season opened this past week with a meet in Garrison on Thursday.
Both Bottineau and Westhope-Newburg competed in the meet, and it was both teams’ first time outside this season.

Rugby’s 332 paced the pack to win the meet. Bottineau finished 10th with a team score of 389 and Westhope-Newburg finished ninth with a total of 378.

The team totals are calculated by using the team’s top four 18-hole scores and adding them together.

“The boys felt pretty good considering they have not had a meet or outdoor practice all year,”stated Sioux coach Casey Mills.

The medalist of the meet was Josh Nelson from Bishop Ryan, who finished with a 75.

Westhope-Newburg junior Hunter Braaten finished fifth in the meet after he carded a 79. The Sioux’s second best finisher was senior Lane Berentson, who carded an 18-hole score of 87.

Rugby’s Jack McClintock shot a 76 to finish second and Kalen Elm of Bishop Ryan and Nick Myhre of Northern Lights tied for third with 78’s.
Both Bottineau and Westhope-Newburg will have two meets this upcoming week. Both teams travel to Velva on Thursday for a meet at Star City Golf Course and Bottineau will host the Sioux and other Region 4 teams on Friday for a meet at Bottineau Country Club.

“We hope to be on the course this week for practice, although we will be limited to certain areas and greens,” Mills stated. “They look to improve several strokes in the next few weeks in preparation for qualifying tournaments.

Both teams also had an individual qualifying meet yesterday at Garrison, but scores were unavailable by press time. At an individual qualifier any golfer who shoots 79 or better qualifies for the state tournament in Mandan on May 27-28.
