There were a lot of firsts this past week for the Westhope-Newburg-Bottineau softball team.
The Sioux won their first game over a sanctioned opponent on Friday in a 12-6 victory over Central McLean. The game was also their first win of the season.

In that game junior Ashlyn Huber threw the programs first one hitter, and the program’s first error less game. In a game of Central McLean on Monday of the week senior Hadlee Schell hit the first ever over the fence home run in Sioux softball history.

The games were played on Minot State’s football field and were the first action for the Sioux.
In game one on Monday the Sioux piled on 18 runs on 16 hits, but couldn’t capture a victory after a 13-run bottom of the seventh gave Central McLean a 26-18 win.

Huber pitched the Sioux into an 18-13 lead heading into the final frame, but tapered off and allowed 13 runs.

In addition to Schell’s homer, WNB was led by sophomore Jacie Ceglowksi, who went 4-for-5 with three runs, three steals and two runs batted in (RBI).

Schell racked up five RBI’s in the loss and senior Ashley Ryan was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
In the Sioux’s first win of the season and first ever sanctioned win ever on Friday it was a combination of strong offense and a gem of a game from Huber that propelled the Sioux to victory.

WNB scored in each of the first six innings and had four in the fifth inning to take a 10-4 lead.
Huber didn’t allow a hit until one out in the seventh inning, when Central McLean managed a bloop single.

At the dish for the Sioux senior Becca Christenson had a strong game going 4-for-5 with four RBI, three runs and two stolen bases.

Ceglowski walked four times, stole four bases and scored four times in the win.

Senior Rylee Lodoen added two more RBI for WNB in the six-run win.

The Sioux (1-1) have a very busy schedule in the upcoming week as they have multiple games scheduled for Thursday and Friday of the week.
On Thursday WNB plays both Central McLean and Watford City at Minot-South Hill Complex.

On Friday the Sioux again play in Minot against region opponents DLB-Berthold, Kenmare-MLS and Thompson.
