Bottineau has a new art studio in town which will be offering a variety of art lessons and mediums for individuals to learn and enjoy.

Nancy Cogdill from Souris has opened Masterpiece Art Studio in the State Farm building on Highway 5 and is offering classes in pastels, lettering, oils, pencil and other mediums.

Cogdill will be offering private and public lessons which will include children classes, freestyle sessions and art events. Her schedule is as follows:

  •  Tuesday – Children under 12 from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
  •  Wednesday – Freestyle classes from 1:30 to 5 p.m.
  •  Thursday – Freestyle classes from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
  •  Friday – Freestyle classes from 1:30 to 5 p.m.
  •  Saturday – Art events from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The children and art events are all inclusive (Cogdill provides the topic, supplies and provides the instruction); however, the freestyle events are instruction only.

When it comes to the art events, Cogdill is planning a variety of events through the summer, which she feels will get area residents excited about the arts and humanities.

“I am going to do an event called The Sky’s the Limit, where I will have the students choose oils or pastels, arrange them in a circle with no photo and teach them to use their imagination. Tell them to imagine the sky and ask them what color would the sky be; what type of clouds, if any; where will the horizon line be and is the horizon flat or mountainous,” Cogdill said. “I am also going to have a Classical Art event where the students would paint violins, piano keys, white gloves or roses. It will be a still life kind of class and we will play classical music, too.

“And, I will be having a Paint the Town event where I am going to go uptown and photograph the town, take pictures, and we are going work painting the town in the studio. We’re going to paint the town,” she added. “I have a bunch of ideas like Face It where we do portraits; Home on the Range where we go up in the hills or out on the prairie and paint farmsteads; Go Green where we paint trees, green apples or grasslands with buffalo and drink green lemonade and on and on. Just have some fun stuff to do while learning art.”

Cogdill is a master herself in the art world. She has been an artist since childhood and can bring a canvas alive with her images.

“I come from a long family of artists. I was born in Minot and started art at a young age. My dad was a sign painter and an artist and my brother is an artist and my sister is a sign painter,” Cogdill said. “And, I worked at Sign Works in Minot for over 20 years.”

Today, Cogdill operates the Souris Post Office and continues to paint with the same passion she had as a child.

“I love art,” she said. “And I love people and I am excited to offer Masterpiece Art Studio to those who want to learn art and have fun doing it.”
Individuals who want to participate in the children, freestyle or art events must sign up prior to the events. Individuals can contact Cogdill at 243-6406 or 263-5161. Individuals can also contact her at nlcogdill@gmail.com.
