Dakota College at Bottineau (DCB) head men’s basketball coach Corey Fehringer announced his first recruit for the 2013-14 season this past week as Lorne Jay Jr. of St. John inked his letter of intent to become a Lumberjack next season.
Jay, a six-foot, three-inch guard, who was injured for much of last season as a senior, was a promising prospect after averaging 17.5 points per game and being named All-District in his junior season. Fehringer and DCB got a good look at him early on in his senior season, and decided he would be a good fit for the team.
“Barring the injury we saw him early in the year and we think his ability to shoot the ball, especially from extended depth can definitely help this team moving into next year, since we lost several shooters,” Fehringer said. “I think an area of his game that is underrated is his ability to pass the basketball. I think when you have somebody who can put it in the bucket and at the same time be able to make the right passes, it creates problems (for other teams).”
As a junior Jay shot 52 percent from the field and averaged five assists and five rebounds according to www.berecruited.com.
Jay is excited to become a Lumberjack next season.
“I’m just excited to come and see what I can do at the next level,” Jay said.
Proximity was the Jay’s No. 1 reason for selecting DCB.
“It’s close to home,” Jay said about the reason to play at DCB. “I liked what he (Fehringer) was thinking about doing, and I like the set up for next year.”
Fehringer believes that Jay will be a strong addition to the Lumberjacks, who finished 2012-13 with 11-21 record, falling to United Tribes Community College in the opening round of the Region XIII Tournament.
“I look forward to him continue to grow as a player and a person,” Fehringer said. “I really believe he is going to have an opportunity to help us out next year.”
The Jacks had five freshman on their roster at the end of 2012-13.
