The Dakota College at Bottineau Ladyjacks trailed by 11 during the second half of last nights Region XIII title game against Gogebic Community College.
Then momentum shifted.
The Ladyjacks hit a couple buckets and profited from a few trips to the line to swing the momentum in a wild title game.
With the momentum firmly in grasp all the Ladyjacks needed to do to seal a victory was hit a few clutch free throws, which they did to earn a 73-71 win.
“We made some big buckets against their press that kind of got us back in it,” said Ladyjacks head coach Wayne Johnson. “We just battled back and hit the big buckets when we needed to.”
“We hit free throws too, so that was huge, and that might have been the difference in the game,” Johnson added.
As the buzzer sounded the students stormed the court as the Ladyjacks advanced to play in the District F title game on Saturday, March 9.
Johnson said it was a scary game to endure.
“They were really good team, and their quickness and aggressiveness really scared us,” Johnson said. “We kind of lived on the edge of being able to attack and attack intelligently, because the more the game got wide open the worse it was for us.”
Sophomore Jackie Miller, who was named to the Region XIII MVP scored 18 points to lead DCB.
Josie DeGagne, also a sophomore, also made the All-Region squad. She had 17 points in the title game. Sophomore Jordyn Sondrol added 10 points and 15 rebounds in the win.
“Overall it was a great team effort,” Johnson said. “The kids didn’t quit, and I’m so proud of them.”
The title was the second region title in three years for the Ladyjacks. They won the title back in 2011.
Johnson said it meant a lot to the team, and likes the way the girls are playing right now.
“It was a huge win for us, and it obviously made the season,” Johnson said. “We’ve played well in the last four ball games, so we’re going in the right direction at the right time.”
