A win and two losses in the final week of the regular season put the Westhope-Newburg (WN) Sioux at a 3-16 record heading into the playoffs.
Westhope-Newburg kicked off their week with a 53-38 defeat at the hands of Rolette-Wolford last Tuesday in Rolette.
The Comets took the lead early and never relinquished it as they led by nine at halftime and ended with a 15-point win.
Eight different Comets scored in the win, led by Rae Beaver’s 12 points.
The Sioux were led by senior Bailey Tofteland’s 11 points. Also in double figures was sophomore Lauren Mach, who had 10 points in the losing effort.
WN turned things around on Thursday as they earned a 50-41 road win over Region 6 opponent Surrey.
The Sioux jumped out to a big lead early, as they led 16-2 after one quarter. The lead kept growing throughout the game, but the Mustangs made one final run in the fourth quarter.
The Sioux were able to maintain their distance in the nine-point win.
Tofteland again was superb for WN as she had a game-high 20 points. Fellow senior Jade Teske also played well as she finished with 16 points in the win.
Skylar Bertsch and Chelsie Deibert each had 11 points for the Mustangs in the loss.
WN closed out their week and regular season with a tough 59-50 loss to nearby Glenburn on Saturday night.
The Panthers got on top early as they led 11-4 after one quarter. The lead stretched to 10 by halftime and 12 at the end of three.
The Sioux took a page out of Surrey’s book and made a fourth-quarter comeback, but fell short by nine points.
Glenburn’s Parker Bush led all scorers with 16 points.
The Sioux were led by Teske who netted 14 points in the win. Also scoring in double figures was Mach with 11 points. Tofteland finished with nine points in the loss.
WN will be the sixth seed entering the District 11 Tournament that begins on Friday in Dunseith.
In Friday’s final game at approximately 7:30 p.m. the Sioux will play third-seeded Towner-Granville-Upham.
If the Sioux scored an upset they would play the winner of two seed Rugby and seventh-seeded Sawyer again at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. A loss to the Titans on Friday would have them play the loser of that game at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The two region play-in games and the district title game will be on Monday, March 4 beginning at 4:30 p.m.
