On Friday, Feb. 22, Tim Mundt, 49, of Westhope, who has been charged with the murder of Jessie Kirk, 40, of Westhope, had his initial hearing in district court at the Bottineau Courthouse where he requested a court appointed lawyer.

Northeast Judicial District Court Judge Michael Sturdevant conducted the hearing and granted Mundt the opportunity to apply for a court appointed attorney.

According to Bottineau County’s States Attorney, Swain Benson, the murder is a closed case at the moment because the investigation into Kirk’s murder is still ongoing. However, Benson did state that Kirk was shot and killed by a rifle.

Mundt’s murder charge is a Class AA Felony, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole if found guilty.

Mundt’s next appearance in court will take place on Tuesday, March 19 in Bottineau’s district courtroom.
