The Bottineau 19U girls hockey team recently received new jerseys which display their newly adopted logo and nickname—the Stars.
While the team will still be affiliated with the USA Hockey League (aka Junior Golds) they have decided to adopt the Stars name to help create familiarity with the other Bottineau girl’s high school sports teams.
“I have felt since the inception of the girl’s hockey program nine years ago that we have really not created an image that is easily associated with girl’s high school sports,” stated Chuck Neubauer in an email, a parent and supporter of the Bottineau girls hockey program.
The Stars recently began wearing the jersey’s with the new moniker on them.
Bottineau is 18-3 as of Feb. 14 and is one of the top three teams in the ND USA Hockey League.
Neubauer stated that the change from nicknames like the Avalanche and the Storm would eventually mutate to the community-wide recognized nickname of the Stars.
“It was really only a matter of time and a no-brainer that the girls needed to compete with the Stars logo and nickname,” Neubauer stated. “We feel it is important that the community make the association that “Stars Hockey” is Girl’s High School Hockey, following the traditions set forth by the other girl’s high school sports in the community.”
The Bottineau Stars hockey team will conclude their home schedule at 2 p.m. on Saturday with senior night as they host Langdon.
The Stars will attempt to make a run at the state title following that. Bottineau recorded their best finish in the state tournament as they captured a runner-up finish last year.
The state tournament will be held in Devils Lake on March 1-3.
