Westhope-Newburg edged Drake-Anamoose 39-38 last Tuesday for their second win of the season and in district play.
The Sioux and Lady Raiders battled back and forth all game. The momentum seemed to all be shifted the Sioux’s way heading into the fourth quarter as WN led 30-22.
However, a charge from the Raiders in the fourth quarter brought them to the brink of a comeback. The Sioux held on, and managed to improve their District 11 record to 2-5.
The win kept the Raiders without a win in district play and could potentially put the Sioux in a tie with Sawyer, which would give the Sioux the sixth seed since WN beat the Flashes on Jan. 18.
In last Tuesday’s narrow win the Sioux were led by senior Bailey Tofteland, who scored 15 points in the win. Sophomore Lauren Mach added 11 points in the victory.
Rachel Handeland was the only Raider in double figures. She had 14 points.
The Sioux are now 2-14 overall on the season.
Up next for WN is a game at 7:15 p.m. tonight in Rolette. The Sioux will also travel to Surrey (7:15 p.m. on Thursday) and Glenburn (7:15 p.m. on Saturday) this week to close out their regular season schedule.
The District 11 tournament will be held March 1-3 in Dunseith. The Sioux will either be the sixth or seventh seed and play either second-seeded Rugby or third-seeded Towner-Granville-Upham to begin the district tournament.
