Bottineau-Rugby junior Harrison Aide made school history over the weekend. With the help of editor Scott Wagar, who was former area hockey player himself, we found an article that listed that in 1972 Dave Klingbeil of BHS scored not only a BHS record 76 points, but a then-state record.

The short article stated that Klingbeil had scored 53 goals and 23 assists in 21 games to notch the record.

Last season it was reported that Logan Millican had broken a record held by former Mr. Hockey Eric Herbel as the scoring record.

I was then approached by several people that this was not a true record, and upon discovering the Klingbeil article, it appears that is true.

However, none of that matters anymore as Aide is now the undisputed record holder.

Aide tied the mark with a goal and an assist last Thursday against Minot. He then eclipsed the mark on Friday against Bismarck Century as he earned a first-period helper.

Aide then went on to gain two more assists in the game and another assist in Saturday’s game against Bismarck High.

This sets Aide’s tally at 80 points, 30 goals and 50 assists in 20 games this season.

BR’s season is not over yet either, they still have at least two games left in the region tournament this weekend and likely three. Plus if they are able to avoid upsets, or are able to upset teams ranked higher than themselves, then the Braves would advance to the State Tournament where they would be guaranteed more games.

Not only is Aide now BHS’ scoring record holder, he also has a chance to approach the North Dakota state record.

Based on some internet research I was able to find out that the current record is held by Jeremy Asheim of Bismarck High. The record of 99 points was set in 1992.

For Aide to break that record he would have to continue on his average of four points a game and lead the Braves to a second consecutive State Tournament appearance. That would give him the necessary five games, which at four points per game would put him at 100 points.

Even so, the total that already stands is quite impressive.

Also impressive this season, apart from Aide, is senior Cody Longie, who has scored 59 points, 24 goals and 35 assists as a defenseman and is second only to Aide in scoring in the state.
