Two double-digit losses to district opponents marked another difficult week for the Bottineau Stars.
The Stars fell to Rugby at home 56-41 on Tuesday and then lost 50-21 to District 11’s top team Velva on the road on Friday.
Bottineau had one of their most spirited starts this season against Rugby as they traded the momentum back and forth with the Panthers in the first half last Thursday. But the Stars trailed by four at halftime and lost concentration in the third as the Panthers opened up a 16-point lead by the end of the third quarter.
Rugby’s Aubrey Hovland had 19 point to pace all scorers. Bottineau was led by junior Courtney Gallagher’s 11 points, while Danielle McDonald chipped in nine and senior McKenzie Jensen finished with seven.
Friday’s game at Velva didn’t go any better for the Stars.
The Aggies pounced on the Stars early and had a 13-3 lead after one quarter. By halftime the game was a full on blow out as the Aggies were up 35-5 at the break. Velva coasted from there on out and wound up with a 29-point victory.
Velva spread their scoring out as four different players had at least nine points for the Aggies.
Bottineau was led by Taisyn Rodriguez’s five points. Jensen, Gallagher and Whitney Brandvold each had four points in the loss.
For the Stars (3-10, 1-4) the losses to Rugby and Velva were their third and fourth straight losses on the season.
Bottineau has strong chances to win in their upcoming schedule as they host Westhope-Newburg at 7:30 p.m. tonight and then travel to Our Redeemer’s on Thursday.
