The Westhope-Newburg Sioux dropped two District 11 contests the past week to Dunseith and Velva as they were unable to capture their second district victory of the season.
First last Monday the Sioux took on the Dragons in Dunseith, the game coming after the Sioux earned their first win of the season and district play over Sawyer.
On Monday, however, the Sioux were unable to get past another district opponent as the Dragons got past the Sioux 43-30.
Dunseith dominated in the first half as they got out to a 20-7 lead by halftime. The Sioux battled back in the second half, scoring double digits in points in each quarter. However, the Dragons offense accomplished the same feat and wound up with a 13-point victory.
Dunseith’s Tanika Norquay led all scorers 15 points, and Elizabeth Handeland added 10 points in the win.
The Sioux were led by senior Hadlee Schell’s nine, while sophomore Lauren Mach added seven.
Westhope-Newburg dropped their second district contest of the week last Friday as the districts first-place Velva Aggies came to Westhope and downed the Sioux 76-39.
Velva’s offense exploded early, as they scored 27 points in the opening quarter and went on to build a 19-point lead at halftime. When all was done, the Aggies enjoyed a 37-point win.
Eight Aggies scored in the win, paced by Jaylen Newman’s 18 points.
Molly Lodoen and Bailey Tofteland each had 12 to lead the Sioux’s scoring attack.
Westhope-Newburg looks to bounce back in district play with a game at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday in Towner against Towner-Granville-Upham.
The Sioux also played a non-district game last night as they hosted Des Lacs-Burlington. Scores and stats were unavailable by press time.
