The Dakota College at Bottineau Lumberjacks hit the ice three times in the past week, but fell three times as they were bested by Williston State

College last Wednesday and were shut out twice by the Minot State Beavers over the weekend.

First on Wednesday the Jacks played their closest contest with the Tetons this season as they fell 4-2 in a contest in Williston.

Williston scored three times in the first two periods and took a 4-0 lead in the third period, but DCB wasn’t quite done as freshman and Bottineau-Rugby alum Kyle Volk scored a pair of third period goals. However, the Jacks were unable to catch up. Seth Serhienko, another Bottineau-Rugby alum assisted on the second of Volk’s goals.

“It was our best game systems wise all season. Guys finally bought in and it showed,” stated Jacks head coach Travis Rybchinski. “We need to try to create more scoring chances. We need to tweak some things for the play offs against them but tonight was a good progression to where we want to go.”

DCB then played a home-and-home series with the Minot State Beavers, four-year club school which boasts seven ex-Lumberjacks on their roster and a Jacks alum as a coach.

Minot State shut out the Jacks in both contests 10-0 in Minot on Saturday and 14-0 in Bottineau on Sunday.

“It was men against boys out there. We ran out of gas late on Saturday night and I thought we gave up on Sunday at times,” Rybchinski stated. “It was a very difficult game for us. It is very frustrating getting beat that bad. It was a combination of us being shorthanded and sick most of the week, and Minot State being a really good skilled team.”

“They have depth, scoring, good defense and goaltending. I have never seen a more talented team out of Minot in my 11 years here. They have a great opportunity to do well and win at Nationals  this year,” Rybchinski added.

The game scheduled between the Jacks and Beavers for Friday night has been cancelled.

“It does both teams no good playing if the game is not going to be competitive,” Rybchinski stated.

DCB’s next focus is their playoff series against the Tetons, which kicks off on Feb. 6 in Williston. The winner of the best-of-three series advances to the NJCAA National Tournament.
